St. Peter’s has operated a preschool and pre-k program in the Smyrna community since September of 1994. The programs follow the academic year aligned with the Smyrna School District. In order to ensure quality development for the children we serve, St. Peter’s participates in the Delaware Institute of Excellence in Early Childhood Education at the University of Delaware. We value being an active member of the Smyrna community.
Vision Statement
The vision of St. Peter’s Preschool is to provide a well-planned program and a safe environment that engages children led by certified staff who are warm, nurturing, and can adapt to a variety of children’s needs. We believe the work we do with children is foundational and matters because it shapes the minds of children and the future of our community. Success with this work gives a sense of pride and accomplishment. We are supported by an advisory board who recognizes the collective achievements from the staff and enjoys recognizing the little things done to create an enthusiastic workplace. The vision of the program is also one that will lead into the future by keeping up with current research and best practices in early childhood education.
Curriculum
The Creative Curriculum for preschool uses developmentally appropriate practices to match the way children develop and learn in order to promote an optimal learning environment. The Creative Curriculum provides expanded content for supporting dual language learning and includes teacher resource volumes for math and literacy. It defines and incorporates thirty-eight objectives for development learning that are predictors of school success and are aligned to the Delaware Early Learning Foundations and Common Core standards.
St. Peter’s utilizes The Creative Curriculum in our classroom with the teacher supplementing the curriculum in their unique way to enhance the learning process. When joining our friends at St. Peter’s Preschool, your child and family will explore and celebrate through Grandparents’ Day, Superhero Dad Day, Mom and Me Tea, the Christmas show and graduation.
The Food Pantry is housed in the basement of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. It is open Monday through Friday from 9:30AM to 10:30AM except on holidays. Volunteers are always in need to serve on specific days each week, substitute when needed, sort through large donations, or pickup the donated items from Wawa each morning.
In August each year we purchase backpacks and fill them with bright new school supplies for second graders. These are delivered to the North Smyrna Elementary School and given to students who otherwise might not have the necessary items they need.
The supplies not only help them with learning but also fulfill the desire to have what the other students have and puts a smile on their faces! There is a great need for these items. In the last few years, we’ve donated over 40 backpacks each year.
We partner with the First State Animal Shelter and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) to provide for basic necessities and caring for animals experiencing transitions or trauma.
Home of the Brave is a ministry to homeless veterans. They have an old renovated farmhouse on 5 acres of land, south of Milford. It was started by Vietnam Veterans who saw and understood the plight of homeless veterans and decided to do something about it. A home for women veterans has also been built on the same property.
Each June the parish collects paper products, personal items, household items, cleaning supplies and office products for their small staff and residents.
This is our oldest continually operating service ministry of St. Peter’s. Over 50 years ago, Naomi Dunning (now deceased) was a part of a body of women who started a gift shop for the residents of DHCI. She recruited members of our parish to assist in this endeavor. The gift shop started in a closet and has expanded over the years into a true gift shop that also sells personal items and snacks to their residents. Post-Covid, we serve as volunteers in the gift shop occasionally when needed. St. Peter’s parishioners continue to be part of the auxilary group that benefits the residents.
During the Christmas Season, St. Peter’s sends a Christmas card to all the residents living in the facility and also helps in fulfilling the Christmas wish lists of some of the residents.
St. Peter’s is one of several churches active in the Smyrna-Clayton Ministerium where local churches have joined together to serve in the name of Christ those in need who live within the Smyrna School District area.
Several months each year we collect: food for the community food pantry housed within St. Peter’s in our office-wing basement; personal items for the Personal Items Closet housed within Ewell-St. Paul’s United Methodist Church; and money for the Emergency Fund housed at the First Presbyterian Church.
We also participate in the three ecumenical services: Good Friday, Patriot’s Day Remembrance (9/11) and Thanksgiving Eve.
